After much experimentation, we have developed a method of getting thinly sliced black walnut cross-sections to achieve a free-form bowl shape as they relieve the stresses they incurred over the life of the tree. These bowls display the natural blonde coloring of new growth wood around the perimeter, sometimes with streaks of grays and browns, and then the rich tones of black walnut at the center. Specific size and shape varies, with the photo showing a few representative samples. They are finely sanded and given a hand-rubbed satin finish appropriate for food contact (fruit displays), but not intended for long-term water exposure and definately not dishwasher safe. Some bowls also include small voids that were part of the growth of that limb and can add exceptional drama to the piece--but please specify if you wish your bowl to exclude voids.
