Doug Moe: Chandler Street oak had long history
Wisconsin State Journal, August 20, 2012
It's just a stump now, and hardly that, protruding only a few inches out of the ground behind a house on Chandler Street.
But in its day, that old bur oak was something. Really something — and really old. By one estimate, at least as old as the United States.
Paul Morrison and Sarina Schrager sipped coffee Friday morning as they talked about the tree, which stood until April 2011 in Schrager's back yard on Chandler. Its circumference then was 13 feet, six inches.
The tree was included on a 1976 list of oaks within eight miles of the state Capitol that were at least 200 years old. Across decades it was a centerpiece of the Vilas neighborhood. Kids swung on tires and on a clothesline that stretched from the tree to the back porch.
"The first zip line in Madison," said Jeff Nania, who grew up in the house.
Once it even served as a safe haven for monkeys on the lam from the Vilas Zoo, one of the great escapades in Madison lore.

Branching out. When trees get a second life, local business can benefit.
Wisconsin Natural Resources Magazine October 2012
The idea for the next American Girl™ doll might be born around a conference table. Perhaps she'll be an arborist, urban forester or artisan.
And that conference table? It could come from a 150-plus-year-old bur oak grown on the site of American Girl headquarters in Middleton. When the company moved to its current location in 1988, American Girl founder Pleasant T. Rowland saw the magnificent tree as a perfect symbol of the company's bold beginnings and it served as a steadfast reminder that, "Mighty oaks from tiny acorns grow."

I got quotes for (custom) cabinets from local kitchen design stores and lumbar yards that I assumed would be more reasonable but were all much more expensive than I expected. In the end I got a quote from Paul Morrison at The Wood Cycle in Oregon, WI. He was surprisingly more affordable and I ended up with the most beautiful, well made, well designed, unique, custom cabinets, all made with re-purposed local wood...
